Call the Cops?

One of my fellow purple belts raised a very good question in class: if you are forced to defend yourself and do so successfully, should you call the cops? Say you are walking home at night or are having a drink at a bar and get attacked by someone or by multiple people. You successfully defend yourself using your Kajukenbo techniques and leave the attackers incapacitated on the ground. Now, as our Sifu mentioned, in some cases it might be wise to leave the scene and then call the police from off-scene in order to avoid any other possible attackers, friends of the wounded for example. Yet, the question is whether you should call the police at all.

The possible advantages of calling the police are the following: 1) in some cases, you might still be holding the attacker down and need the police's assistance. 2) The attackers are caught and held criminally liable for their offenses, hopefully deterring them from attacking again. 3) You avoid possible legal repercussions for fleeing the scene after being involved in a fight. Can you get in trouble if you never contact the police after being involved in a fight?

However, the possible advantages of not calling the police in this sort of situation are the following: 1) You possibly avoid having to get involved in the criminal proceedings. In the best outcome, one could spend lots of time that one does not have having to testify in court. In the worst outcome, the police don't believe that you were acting in self-defense and you end up going to jail! 2) You also avoid having to face later retaliation from the attackers for calling the police. These fears of getting mixed up in legal problems oneself and of being a “rat” represent very persuasive fears in a society that often shows great reluctance to get involved in such matters for the police.

Hence many would consider not calling the police in this situation as the better option. People might think that the beating they put on the attackers in self-defense was punishment enough and that a clean getaway from the incident is preferable to possibly facing criminal charges against themselves.

So what do you think: should people call the police after successfully defending themselves?

Always lean towards the safe side. If you are legitimately defending your life or others you have nothing to worry about. You don't want the "suspect" to give only his side of the story to the cops and portray you as the aggressor. This will cost you even more down the line. Call the cops. Plus, if this attacker is attacking you then it's most likely he/she has attacked others. Remember Chelsea from Poway...Her attacker tried to assault a jogger several months prior and was beaten back. If we can prevent this attacker from attacking others than we did our job. Now, when to call...It depends on the situation. If you are legitimately attacked and by yourself, I recommend you get out of the area before making the call. If for some reason you are able to subdue the attacker and get the needed assistance from other people then I would make the call right then. You never know you might have a serial attacker like the one in Rancho Bernardo. Just remember, there are no set answers for real life scenarios. The streets are very violent and unpredictable. Just always remember to be safe and use good common sense when dealing with a crisis.
