National Geographic has a great show (not sure when it airs now), called Fight Science, which details a wide variety of topics, including different martial arts disciplines, applications, deciphering mental toughness/awareness type training. I wanted to add this video not to showcase the Mixed Martial Arts (doesn't need my endorsement to gain popularity), but to enlighten and inform the 'science' aspects by which this episode breaks down the details of combat/combat training. This information, however much or little is absorbed can be incorporated through having a better understanding within the arts. It discusses punching power, speed, all things that are applicable that we attempt to explain in our training methods. In short, it's very essential that once its understood that great techniques will greatly increase the accomplishment of ones goals, as oppose to training only for 'power' and having a lack of discipline to absorb details. The video is approximately 45 minutes, but a great view to make the novice and even the experienced practitioners understand all of the intricacies of combat. Enjoy and happy training!!
